Labiaplasty Information provided by Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Newport Beach California
An enlarged labia can cause psychological stress from both a functional and cosmetic standpoint. Functionally, a large labia can cause pain during sexual intercourse as well as discomfort in activities such as walking, cycling, or prolonged sitting. Cosmetically, large labia can be a source of great self-consciousness and embarrassment especially in intimate settings. Over the past few years, increasing number of women have sought a solution for this most personal of makeovers. In response to the demand, plastic surgery techniques have evolved to achieve both a functional and aesthetically pleasing result from labiaplasty.
In the past, a simple excision or amputation of the protuberant area was performed. This technique did achieve a cosmetically better appearing labia and vagina. However, functionally, patients often complained of the area being very much more fragile after surgery, with frequent pain in response to various activities. Newer techniques were developed to overcome these functional deficits. Preservation of anatomic structures in labiaplasty was described with much better surgical outcome. Dr. Lee performs labiaplasty with preservation of these anatomic structures in mind.
Labiaplasties are performed in an outpatient setting. Surgery can be performed under general or sedation anesthesia. The surgery takes about an hour. Swelling and discomfort are gone usually within two weeks, and most women are back to normal activity within 3-6 weeks.
